Although artificial turf was developed initially for sports applications, AvTurf LLC used current technology to refine the quality of this synthetic material and created a system by which artificial turf can be attached to headers or glued down with a patented adhesive. The type of synthetic turf that AvTurf developed is engineered and constructed specifically for airfield use. AvTurf LLC has been the leader in this application, resulting in worldwide industry recognition.
AvTurf incorporates a polypropylene fiber tufted into a primary and secondary synthetic backing to emulate the look of natural grass while providing superior strength, durability, and flame resistance. This tufted synthetic system is filled with 5 pounds of sand infill with a patented growth inhibitor to preclude airborne seeding of vegetation and the use of herbicides. When installed over a compacted, aggregate base the system exhibits a force versus deformation profile that allows the system to be traversed by heavy aircraft, emergency vehicles, or maintenance equipment under any weather conditions. It also allows water to penetrate and drain through the prepared base to avoid ponding, critical to the airfield environment. This patented system provides Foreign Object Debris(“FOD”) control, positive drainage, soil stabilization and a uniform surface. The system has all weather capability and comes with an eight year warranty.
