First Military Aviation Artificial Turf Installation
The United States Air Force Academy installed approximately 27,000 square feet of AvTurf along the western shoulder of Runway 16R/34L in the spring of 2004. The installation served as a transition area between the Sail Plane Landing Area (SPLA) and the runway. This transition area is used to stage the Sail Planes after they have landed and are waiting to be placed back on the runway to be hooked up to the Tow Planes for another take off. The natural grass in that area was unable to withstand the numerous amounts of training flights taking off and landing during a given day, so the Air Force turned to the superior durability characteristics only AvTurf provides. The artificial turf installation provides the USAFA a clean staging area for the Sail Planes and has essentially eliminated the erosion problems along side that portion of the runway.
