12/13/08 - Hudson splashdown birds ID'd as geese
A flock of Canada geese, one of the most common large birds in North America, prompted the landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, the government confirmed.
The National Transportation Safety Board said the geese were identified by DNA testing and feather analysis at the Smithsonian Institution's Feather Identification Lab. Geese generally weigh between 6 and 12 pounds. The engines on the Airbus A320 were certified to shut down after an impact from a single 4-pound bird, according to federal regulations. Flight 1549 splashed into the Hudson River on Jan. 15. All 155 people survived. — Alan Levin
